Sushi Chef with Ties to Iron Chef Takes Over at Umi Sushi & Oyster Bar

Chef Kiyokuni Ikeda at Pechanga

TEMECULA, Calif. – (June 24, 2015) – Kiyokuni Ikeda, a self-taught sushi chef who dropped out of high school to aid his ailing father, has landed the top job at Umi Sushi & Oyster Bar at Pechanga Resort & Casino. After spending nearly 15 years working at prestigious sushi restaurants in Philadelphia such as Zama and Morimoto (of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto fame), Ikeda is happy to call Southern California home.

Though they lived in Tokyo, Chef Ikeda’s parents ran a successful coffee and soba noodle shop in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, more than two hours away. He helped in the shop occasionally as a child, but he recalls one singular moment when food opened his eyes to another world.

“When I was 10 years old, I tried an Egg McMuffin. It was kind of a shock to me, in a good way,” Chef Ikeda explained. “The texture and flavor were so different from anything I’d ever eaten before. English muffins weren’t something you could find at the market, and in Japan, or at least in my family, we never cooked eggs that way.”  Read More

Crew Member Hauls Old Carpet for Recycling

TEMECULA, Calif. – (April 15, 2015) – An unlikely conservationist by most accounts, the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California has totaled up trash equivalents its staff recycles on an annual basis. The statistics are staggeringly positive.

The amount of glass, aluminum, cardboard and e-waste the largest casino in California turns over for recycling each year totals the same volume of trash generated by the equivalent of a city the size of Moreno Valley, Calif. or Fontana, Calif. – populations of about 200,000 people. Read More

101Year Young So Cal Woman Celebrates B-Day at Pechanga

101 Birthday-4932

Chef Martin Venegas & Ruth Passavant (101 yrs old)

TEMECULA, Calif. (Nov. 19, 2014) – Not many people can say they have seen the advent of indoor plumbing, the automobile, the telephone, radio, or television, let alone living through the women’s suffrage movement, the Great Depression, and the administrations of 17 United States presidents. Ruth Passavant of Seal Beach, Calif. is one of those people. For her 101st birthday, she made one of her regular bus trips to Pechanga Resort & Casino. Ruth, her granddaughter, three-year old great granddaughter and friend from her senior community celebrated her milestone (she says everything after 100 is a milestone) with a low key, yet upscale dinner at the resort’s Great Oak Steakhouse. Following dinner, the restaurant’s chef brought Ruth her favorite dessert, a crème brȗlée with glazed fruit. As the sprightly senior posed for a photo with the chef Martin Venegas, she turned to him and said, “My, you’re handsome,” to which the chef noticeably blushed.

Ruth’s Birthday Dessert-Creme Brulee

Ruth’s granddaughter, Kami Gremillion, of Bakersfield, Calif. told restaurant staff that her “nana” is still as sharp as ever. Kami said for Ruth’s 100th birthday, someone gave her a cardboard cutout of actor Channing Tatum. She danced with the cutout that night and still has it in her living room. Ruth and her friends often take bus trips to Pechanga Resort & Casino for the social aspect and to do something different from their everyday routines.

Pechanga Resort & Casino wishes Ruth many more happy birthdays!
