34 Feet of Hair Collected at Spa Pechanga Gives Hope to Those Battling Breast Cancer

34 feet of ponytails laid end to end

TEMECULA, Calif. – (Nov. 17, 2016) – After a month-long campaign to collect ponytails, Spa Pechanga at Pechanga Resort & Casino announces that enough hair donors sacrificed their long locks to stretch 34 feet. That’s two times as tall as a giraffe and going into the holidays, about four and one-half times as tall as the average artificial Christmas tree.

Fifty-one hair donors came into Spa Pechanga, one from as far away as Illinois, and others from Catalina Island, Tijuana, MX and other areas outlying Southern California, to donate eight or more inches of their hair during October. Known across the country as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the generous hair contributors received free haircuts and styles in return. Spa Pechanga sends the hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program which turns it into wigs for women battling breast cancer. Women can obtain the wigs free of charge through the American Cancer Society’s network of national wig banks.

Stats show it takes four to six ponytails to make one complete wig for someone undergoing cancer treatment. This was Spa Pechanga’s fifth year hosting the haircutting campaign and to date, has collected more than 250 ponytails, enough for approximately 62.5 wigs. Spa Pechanga will hold its hair donation campaign again in October 2018 in its new, 25,000 square foot standalone spa and salon.
