For 40 years, the music of Village People has been putting smiles on the faces of fans all around the world.\u00a0 Their hits have become part of the international songbook \u2013 and heard in commercials from Pepsi to Wonderful Pistachios.\u00a0 In fact, the iconic Y.M.C.A<\/em> (along with its dance) is featured at almost every party, wedding, bar mitzvah, and sporting event.<\/p>\n

It began in 1977 when producer\/composer Jacques Morali, with business partner Henri Belolo, were recording a new album for their group, Ritchie Family, called African Queens<\/em>.\u00a0 One of the background singers recruited for the album by arranger and conductor Horace Ott was Victor Willis who was performing in the Broadway musical The Wiz<\/em>.\u00a0 After completing the album, Morali and Belolo again approached Willis \u2013 this time about another musical project they were planning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a dream that you sang lead vocals on an album I produced, and it went very, very big,\u201d Morali told Willis. \u201cI have four tracks. I can\u2019t pay you much right now but if you agree, I\u2019ll make you a star.\u201d Willis agreed.<\/p>\n

Those four tracks, San Francisco (You\u2019ve Got Me), In Hollywood (Everyone\u2019s a Star)<\/em>, Fire Island<\/em>, and Village People<\/em> were recorded by Willis with professional background singers and released on the debut album Village People <\/em>in 1977.\u00a0 Essentially, Village People initially was simply Victor Willis.\u00a0 The album quickly rose to the top of the dance charts.<\/p>\n

Demand for the \u201cgroup\u201d to appear in concert and on television shows like American Bandstand and Merv Griffin was great.\u00a0 The only problem … there was no group!\u00a0 This forced Morali, Belolo and Willis to put together an actual group around Willis and quick.<\/p>\n

Village People become an international phenomenon with the release of their second album, Macho Man<\/em>. Following the release of their third album, Cruisin<\/em>, they embarked on a worldwide tour.\u00a0 Cher, Madonna and Joan Rivers are among artists who appeared on the bill with Village People everywhere from Las Vegas to Madison Square Garden to Hollywood\u2019s Greek Theatre.\u00a0 Even Michael Jackson shared billing with the group.<\/p>\n

With hits like San Francisco\/In Hollywood<\/em>, Macho Man<\/em>, YMCA<\/em>, In the Navy<\/em> and Go West<\/em>, the group sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned many awards including the American Music Award-Favorite Musical Group 1979.\u00a0 Village People was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone<\/em>.\u00a0 Television appearances included a Bob Hope Special<\/em>, 20\/20<\/em>, American Bandstand<\/em>, Solid Gold<\/em>, Soul Train<\/em>, Midnight Special<\/em>, and Don Kirshner\u2019s Rock Concert<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Village People hits are featured in dozens of major motion pictures, including Wayne\u2019s World II<\/em>, Adams Family Values<\/em>, The Nutty Professor<\/em>, and Despicable Me 2<\/em>.\u00a0 The Broadway hit Priscilla: Queen of the Desert<\/em> features the Village People tune Go West<\/em>.\u00a0 The songs are also heard in casinos around the world in \u201cVillage People Party\u201d slot machines.\u00a0 In September 2008, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n

Over the years, various renditions of Village People consistently toured the world with several replacement lead singers.<\/p>\n

On the 40th anniversary of the group, Willis, the original lead singer, returned.
